Investigations into the sudden death of prominent doctor Job Obwaka have taken a dramatic turn, with detectives now treating the case as a suspected poisoning.
According to The Standard, new details presented in court link his final hours to a woman identified as Beatrice Wangari, described as his longtime partner.
Her lawyer told the court that their relationship was not secret, adding that even Dr Obwaka’s family was aware of their involvement.
The two are said to have spent time together on the day he died, sharing a meal and later becoming intimate.
The matter came up at the Kibera High Court, where the Directorate of Criminal Investigations sought to detain Wangari for 14 days to allow completion of investigations.
Authorities argue the case has now shifted from a sudden death to a possible murder inquiry.
Court documents reveal that Dr Obwaka drove to Kitengela on Friday and met Wangari before heading to her residence. It is there that events now under scrutiny are believed to have occurred.
An affidavit filed by a DCI officer indicates that Wangari prepared food which the doctor consumed before resting. She later joined him in the bedroom. Shortly after, his condition reportedly worsened rapidly, raising alarm.
In a bid to save him, Wangari contacted a neighbour who found the doctor unresponsive. Emergency responders attempted to revive him and rushed him to Nairobi Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
Police later arrested Wangari at the hospital and launched a detailed forensic investigation. Items recovered from her house, including utensils, food remains, alcohol bottles, and bedding, were submitted for toxicological analysis.
Investigators insist preserving evidence is critical as they work to establish what caused the doctor’s death.
A post-mortem examination scheduled for May 5 is expected to provide further clarity.
Wangari is also set to undergo a mental assessment before any formal charges are considered. Her lawyer has opposed the detention request, maintaining that their relationship was known, lawful, and acknowledged by the family.
The case continues to attract public attention as authorities piece together what happened in the doctor’s final hours.
