SHA Rolls Out New Health Care Package to Boost Access for Kenyans

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has unveiled an expanded Primary Health Care (PHC) benefits package aimed at making quality medical services more accessible to all Kenyans, especially those in rural and underserved areas.

According to the announcement, the new program introduces five essential health service packages available at Level 2, Level 3, and selected Level 4 health facilities — including health centres, sub-county hospitals, and some county hospitals across the country.

This move comes at a time when Kenya’s healthcare system is under growing pressure to deliver affordable and reliable services to citizens.

The SHA said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community health and promote early treatment of common illnesses before they become severe.

“The five packages include outpatient visits for everyday illnesses such as malaria, coughs, colds, diarrhoea, or wounds — ensuring that basic medical care is available close to home,” the Authority said in a statement.

The comprehensive PHC package also covers chronic disease management, helping patients living with long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, and sickle cell disease.

In addition, Kenyans can now access doctor consultations and prescribed medicines, ensuring that timely and effective treatment is within reach.

The package further includes laboratory and imaging services, such as blood tests, urine analysis, and X-rays, which are essential for accurate diagnosis and monitoring of various medical conditions.

Another important inclusion is eye care services, which provide health education, eye testing, and eyeglasses for children under 18 years.

This aims to detect and address eye problems early, especially among learners whose performance in school can be affected by poor vision.

The SHA noted that these services are available nationwide and called on Kenyans to take advantage of the improved healthcare benefits.

Citizens seeking more details or assistance can contact the Authority through the toll-free number 147 or visit the official SHA website for further guidance.

Through this initiative, SHA hopes to build a stronger foundation for universal health coverage and ensure that every Kenyan, regardless of income or location, can receive quality medical care when they need it most.
