Hussein Mwinyi Wins Second Term as Zanzibar President Amid High Voter Turnout

Zanzibar, Tanzania — Hussein Ali Mwinyi has been re-elected as the President of Zanzibar, securing a decisive victory that extends the ruling party’s long political dominance on the islands.

Official results announced by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) on Thursday, October 30, confirmed that Mwinyi, the candidate for Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), won with 74.8 percent of the total votes cast.

The election saw an impressive 88 percent voter turnout, one of the highest participation rates recorded in the region’s history.

Mwinyi’s victory ensures the continuation of CCM’s political control in both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, where the party’s national presidential candidate, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has also maintained a commanding early lead in the ongoing tally.

In his victory address, President Mwinyi called for unity and reconciliation, urging Zanzibaris to put aside political divisions and focus on building the nation together.

“Let us turn the page and begin a new chapter of progress,” he said, promising to strengthen governance, promote economic reforms, and improve social services across the islands.

Mwinyi, who first assumed office in 2020, expressed gratitude to voters for the trust placed in him and pledged to consolidate the gains made during his first administration.

His wife, First Lady Mariam Mwinyi, joined him at the event, which was broadcast live across major media networks.

Observers noted that the election process was largely peaceful, though some opposition groups raised concerns about transparency in the counting process. Still, the ZEC maintained that the voting exercise was fair and credible.

With the new term, Mwinyi is expected to prioritize job creation, investment in tourism, and youth empowerment — key issues that dominated his campaign.

His re-election also reinforces CCM’s unbroken streak since Zanzibar’s independence, marking another chapter in the party’s six-decade rule.
