Confusion as Late Raila Odinga’s X Account Posts New Tweet, Later Renamed to Foundation Page

Kenyans on social media were left stunned after a post appeared on the official X account of the late Raila Odinga, weeks after his passing. 

The unexpected tweet quickly spread across the platform, sparking emotional reactions and calls for clarification.

The late Raila Odinga, who died on October 15 while receiving treatment in southern India, had one of Kenya’s most followed X accounts with over 4.9 million followers. 

On Thursday evening, October 30, the account shared a message thanking former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta and her family for visiting Mama Ida Odinga at their Karen home to condole with the family.

“Thank you Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta and your family for joining the nation in mourning and visiting Mama Ida Odinga,” the post read.

While the message itself was respectful, it immediately raised eyebrows. Many Kenyans questioned why the account was still active and posting content in Raila’s name after his death. 

Others wondered whether the tweet was sent by his communication team or automated scheduling tools.

Some netizens felt the post was inappropriate and urged the administrators to retire or rename the account to preserve Raila’s digital legacy. 

“This account should be archived as a tribute. It feels wrong to use it for new updates,” one user commented. 

Another added, “Create a foundation page instead of tweeting under his name. It’s painful to see activity from an account that once spoke in his voice.”

Following the widespread public reaction, the handle was soon updated and renamed “The Raila Amolo Odinga Foundation.” 

The move was widely seen as a gesture of respect and a way to transition the account’s purpose toward continuing his legacy through charitable work.

Raila’s supporters welcomed the change, saying it honors the former Prime Minister’s memory while avoiding confusion online.
