Siaya Governor James Orengo has made remarks that have fired up politics in Kenya after speaking openly about former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, President William Ruto and the growing divisions inside Orange Democratic Movement.
Speaking on 7th May 2026, Orengo began with a personal revelation that many Kenyans did not know.
“I have known Rigathi Gachagua. I have been his lawyer. I have acted for everybody. I have even acted for Ruto,” Orengo said.
The statement immediately caught public attention because Orengo was among the legal figures linked to the impeachment process that removed Gachagua from office in October 2024.
During the Senate proceedings, Orengo appeared on the side supporting the motion against the former Deputy President.
Now, he has publicly confirmed that he once represented both Gachagua and Ruto as a lawyer.
But it was his next statement that created even bigger political debate.
“Gachagua qualifies to be president if the court rules — but I think it would be a big disappointment for the president of Kenya to again be elected in the context of what has happened previously,” Orengo stated.
His remarks come at a sensitive moment as Gachagua continues to fight his removal from office in court. The former Mathira MP has insisted his impeachment was unfair and politically motivated.
The High Court completed hearings in April 2026 and the country is now waiting for the final ruling. The judgment is expected to shape the political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
At the same time, Orengo remains one of the leading voices in the Linda Mwananchi faction that has openly differed with ODM’s current cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government.
The faction, linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has signalled support for the United Opposition associated with Gachagua.
Gachagua has also maintained that the opposition coalition will field one presidential candidate against Ruto in 2027. Although he has declared interest in the seat, he says he is ready to support another candidate if the coalition agrees on one.
What makes Orengo’s remarks powerful is his unique position in all these political battles. He has worked as a lawyer for both Gachagua and Ruto, supported the process that removed Gachagua from office, and now stands among leaders criticising the same government his party joined.
