Investigators have pieced together details of how Wangari developed a close relationship with veteran gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, shedding light on events leading up to his sudden death.
Preliminary findings indicate that the woman first met Dr Obwaka in 2015 through her personal gynaecologist.
Their acquaintance reportedly remained professional at first but later grew into a personal relationship following the death of her husband.
Police have since detained Wangari as a person of interest as they seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s death.
Authorities say Dr Obwaka was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital after he fell ill while visiting her in Kitengela on May 1, 2026.
Hospital officials reported that the 83-year-old medic was brought to the facility at about 7 pm by a female companion.
The incident was immediately reported to Kilimani Police Station, prompting the launch of investigations.
According to the woman’s account to detectives, Dr Obwaka contacted her earlier that morning while travelling to see her.
He reportedly kept her informed of his journey and later confirmed his arrival in Kitengela before proceeding to her residence.
She told investigators that she prepared a meal of rice and meat, which they shared.
Shortly after eating, the doctor requested water but soon became drowsy and experienced difficulty breathing after taking a few sips.
He is said to have asked for fresh air as his condition worsened.
The woman sought help from a neighbour who responded and found the doctor unresponsive.
The neighbour then assisted in arranging transport to hospital.
Using the doctor’s phone, she contacted one of his colleagues and a family member, who advised that he be taken to Nairobi Hospital immediately.
He was transported to the facility but was declared dead on arrival.
Police have collected food samples from the residence and scheduled a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
