“Ask yourselves where you’ll be” Kioni tells Kalonzo, Matiang’i in Gachagua power play

A bold political warning by Jeremiah Kioni has ignited fresh debate over Kenya’s next presidential race, placing Rigathi Gachagua firmly at the center of succession politics.

Kioni openly suggested that if Gachagua makes a presidential bid, key opposition figures could find themselves sidelined in a rapidly shifting political landscape.

“When Gachagua runs for the presidency, Kalonzo and Matiang’i should ask themselves where they will be,” Kioni said, in remarks that are already reverberating across political circles.

The statement directly references Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang'i—both widely viewed as potential contenders in future elections—raising questions about their political footing should Gachagua enter the race.

Kioni’s comments come at a time of intensifying behind-the-scenes alignments, with leaders quietly positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

His remarks suggest a growing belief among some insiders that Gachagua’s influence, particularly in the Mt. Kenya region, could significantly reshape the contest.

Political analysts say such statements are rarely casual, often signaling deeper calculations about coalition-building and vote blocs. By publicly framing the conversation this way, Kioni appears to be testing the strength—and reaction—of competing camps.

So far, neither Kalonzo nor Matiang’i has responded directly to the remarks. However, allies from both sides have consistently maintained that their leaders remain strong contenders with established national networks.

Gachagua, for his part, has not declared any presidential ambitions. Still, his recent political activity and grassroots mobilization efforts have kept speculation alive.

Kioni’s warning adds a new layer of urgency to the unfolding succession debate—one that could force key players to reassess their strategies sooner than expected.
