Mary Maingi, the Member of Parliament for Nominated MPs, has ignited political debate with a bold statement about Rigathi Gachagua’s rise to prominence in the Mt. Kenya region.
In a recent interview on K24's Siasa segment, Maingi revealed that before President William Ruto's endorsement, Gachagua was largely unknown in the region.
According to Maingi, it was Ruto's support that catapulted Gachagua into the political spotlight of a region historically known for its political influence in Kenya.
Maingi emphasized that it was Gachagua's late brother, not Rigathi, who had a significant following in Mt. Kenya. "Nobody knew Rigathi Gachagua in Mt. Kenya until he was brought by William Ruto.
In fact, the person who was well-known in the region was his late brother," Maingi stated. This comment has led to further discussions on Gachagua’s political visibility in the region.
The MP also drew attention to Gachagua's relatively brief political career, noting that he only served one term as the Member of Parliament for Mathira, and that term was during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Gachagua was a one-term MP, and that one term was during the COVID-19 period, where much of the time was spent dealing with the effects of the pandemic,” Maingi said.
She questioned whether his short political experience was enough to qualify him for the role of Deputy President.
Maingi further suggested that there were other senior politicians from the region with deeper political experience who deserved the Deputy President position.
She mentioned figures like former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, former Kiambu Governor JK Kariuki, and Senator Kithure Kindiki, all of whom have long-standing political careers and are more seasoned leaders in the Mt. Kenya region.
Her comments have stirred considerable discussion, and political analysts are now closely monitoring how this statement might impact the political landscape in Mt. Kenya.
