Siaya Governor James Orengo has intensified efforts to popularise the Linda Mwananchi Movement, signaling a growing rift within the opposition over the decision by sections of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to support President William Ruto.
In a statement shared after a strategy meeting in Mombasa, Orengo said the movement is shifting its focus to grassroots mobilisation, particularly at the Coast.
The meeting brought together local coordinators led by former MP Hisham Mwidau and youth leader Samba Tobias, whom Orengo described as the face of a new political awakening in the region.
“We are taking the Linda Mwananchi Movement to the grassroots,” Orengo stated, adding that the Coast region has long suffered marginalisation and land injustices.
He accused leaders backing the government of making “empty promises” while failing to address long-standing grievances.
The Linda Mwananchi Movement, spearheaded by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Orengo, has emerged as a dissenting faction within ODM.
The group has openly opposed the party’s rapprochement with President Ruto, positioning itself as a champion of wananchi interests.
Orengo emphasised the need to build what he termed “leadership with a backbone,” arguing that the movement seeks to empower ordinary citizens against political betrayal and systemic exclusion.
He further noted that the Coast would play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political analysts view the growing momentum of Linda Mwananchi as a sign of deepening divisions within the opposition, with the grassroots mobilisation strategy likely to test ODM’s unity in the coming months.
