Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has cautioned Nandi County Senator Kiprotich Cherargei for presenting a motion seeking to scrap the retirement benefits of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to reports, the senator, who filed the motion on May 4, 2026, argued that the former head of state has been engaging in politics even though he is retired.
He alleged that the Constitution is clear on what a former head of state should do, adding that retirement benefits are only given to those who don’t engage in politics.
The renowned politician argued that Uhuru should not be getting his retirement benefits because he has participated in politics on several occasions.
He filed the motion days after the former president said it is his right to contribute to issues affecting the nation.
The former President gave an example of former President Barack Obama of the United States of America, whom he said still participates in U.S. politics even after leaving office.
On May 4, 2026, Governor Kahiga cautioned the senator, saying he might get his wish.
