President William Ruto on Wednesday, January 11, 2026, visited Garissa University in a tour that placed education and regional equity at the centre of his message.
The visit drew an enthusiastic reception from students and local leaders, while also stirring fresh debate about his prospects in the 2027 General Election.
At the institution, the President laid the foundation stone for a new tuition block aimed at expanding lecture space and improving learning conditions.
He said the project forms part of a broader plan to upgrade university infrastructure across the country, with special attention to areas that have for years lagged behind in public investment.
According to him, strengthening higher education is essential to equipping young people with practical skills that match the needs of a changing economy.
Speaking to students and staff, Ruto assured residents of North Eastern Kenya that his administration is focused on fair distribution of resources.
He observed that the region had not always received adequate development support in the past and pledged sustained funding to address gaps in education, infrastructure and economic opportunity.
Education, he noted, remains a key driver in building self reliance and long term national progress.
During his address, sections of students chanted slogans associated with calls for his re election. The President briefly acknowledged the chants, saying they reflected confidence in his development record rather than a campaign event.
Earlier, Ruto presided over a NYOTA programme forum in Garissa where hundreds of young people received financial support to start or expand small enterprises. He said empowering youth through enterprise funding is critical in tackling unemployment.
He also announced that this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations will be held in the North Eastern region, describing the decision as a gesture of national unity and inclusion.
