RIP? Tension Brews in Uganda as Museveni’s Son Reveals This About Opposition Leader Kizza Besigye

Political tensions in Uganda have escalated sharply after the country’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, made explosive remarks suggesting that opposition leader Kizza Besigye could already be facing execution were it not for the intervention of President Yoweri Museveni.

In a message posted on his official X account on February 19, 2026, Muhoozi stated that Museveni was “the only person preventing the execution of Besigye,” a comment that has ignited intense reactions across Uganda and the wider East African region.

The army chief went further to accuse Besigye of plotting to harm the president, framing any potential military action as self-defence.

The remarks come as Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and long-time critic of Museveni’s government, remains in detention at Luzira Prison in Kampala.

He has been held since November 2025 on charges linked to alleged attempts to overthrow the government—claims his allies insist are politically driven.

Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, responded swiftly, condemning the statements and warning that they signal a dangerous erosion of due process and the rule of law. She said such pronouncements from a senior military official create fear and cast doubt on the independence of the justice system.

Across Uganda, civil society organisations and opposition figures have also raised alarm, urging the government to respect constitutional protections and ensure Besigye’s safety while his case is before the courts. Regional observers say the language used by Muhoozi risks inflaming an already tense political climate.

With Uganda approaching another critical political period, analysts warn that escalating rhetoric between the state and opposition could deepen divisions unless leaders move to calm the situation and reaffirm commitment to lawful, democratic processes.
