Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has announced plans to contest the Kisii gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
The declaration marks his official return to active politics after months of relative silence.
Machogu revealed his intention through his social media platforms, where he updated his profile banners to reflect his bid for the Kisii County top office.
The move has quickly drawn attention within local and national political circles.
His decision comes months after his removal from the Cabinet following nationwide Gen Z-led protests.
President William Ruto later appointed Julius Migosi Ogamba as the new Education Cabinet Secretary.
After his exit, Machogu largely stayed away from the political spotlight.
In 2025, however, he began reappearing at public events, often alongside former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
The two toured several parts of Kisii County while campaigning for Matiang’i’s presidential ambition under the Jubilee Party banner.
During these engagements, Machogu consistently encouraged residents to unite and support Matiang’i, arguing that Kisii County needed to speak with one voice ahead of the 2027 elections.
He presented the unity message as key to increasing the region’s national influence.
Machogu has also openly criticized the current government, saying his removal from office reflected a broader pattern of political betrayal against the Kisii community.
He accused leaders aligned with the ruling party of failing to protect local interests at the national level.
In a sharp shift, he distanced himself from the United Democratic Alliance, the party he previously used during the 2022 gubernatorial race.
That contest ended in his defeat by current Governor Simba Arati. Machogu now argues that the party has lost its influence and public trust in the region.
