"Please Forgive Me, I'm The One Who Told You To Vote For Sakaja" Gachagua Begs Nairobi Residents

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua today appealed for forgiveness from Nairobi residents during a political rally attended by prominent opposition leaders.

He acknowledged his role in the 2022 campaigns, where he supported Governor Johnson Sakaja, urging residents to vote for him.

Speaking before a large crowd, Gachagua admitted that his current political alignment with President William Ruto has, in his view, contributed to negative consequences for small business owners in the city, particularly those operating in Gikomba Market.

He claimed that under the current administration, several businesses run by low-income earners have been adversely affected.

Gachagua’s remarks were seen as a rare public apology from a top political figure for past political endorsements.

“I am the one who came to Nairobi in 2022 and asked you to support Sakaja. Today, I humbly ask for your forgiveness,” he said, appealing directly to residents impacted by the perceived economic challenges.

The former deputy president also called on Nairobi residents to consider their vote carefully ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged them to oppose Governor Sakaja’s reelection, citing accountability and the need to protect the interests of small-scale traders.

Political analysts say Gachagua’s speech is part of a broader strategy to consolidate support for President Ruto while weakening opposition influence in Nairobi.

His public acknowledgment of past campaigning missteps highlights growing political tensions in the city, where business concerns and economic grievances are increasingly shaping voter sentiment.

The rally saw active participation from opposition leaders, reflecting a mix of political alliances and ongoing competition in the capital ahead of the next election cycle.

Observers note that Gachagua’s appeal could resonate with voters who feel disillusioned by previous political promises, particularly those affected by urban development policies and market regulations.
