“We Are Not Sifuna”: Deadly Protests Erupt in Samburu After Governor Lelelit’s Harassment

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Senate today to protest what they described as the harassment of Governor Jonathan Lelelit of Samburu County.

The protesters accused lawmakers of unfair treatment and demanded respect for their county leader, arguing that the governor’s dignity must be upheld in the public sphere.

“Watuambie aliiba nini… Anadhalalishwa ni kama si mkenya,” one angry protester shouted, reflecting the sentiment of many in the crowd.

Supporters carried placards and chanted slogans emphasizing county loyalty and the importance of local governance.

The demonstration comes shortly after Governor Lelelit was reportedly forced to enter the Senate chambers amid a tense standoff with some senators.

The incident sparked widespread debate online, with Kenyans divided over whether the protest was justified.

While some praised the demonstrators for standing up for their leader, others criticized the rally as a case of “misplaced priorities,” arguing that citizens should focus on broader governance issues affecting their counties rather than defending individual politicians.

Social media platforms have since been flooded with heated discussions, highlighting the polarization surrounding political accountability in Kenya.

Political analysts suggest that the Samburu protest is emblematic of a larger trend of grassroots mobilization in defense of county leaders.

“This shows how deeply county politics matter to local communities,” said Dr. Wanjiku Mwangi, a Nairobi-based political analyst. “People feel personally connected to their governors, and any perceived mistreatment can quickly spark public outcry.”

As of this afternoon, the protest remained peaceful, with police maintaining a visible presence to ensure order.

Governor Lelelit has not yet publicly commented on the demonstration, but his supporters have vowed to continue advocating for his dignity and fair treatment in national political forums.
