Major Blow To Ruto As Kenya Slips Out Of Top 10 Richest Countries In Africa

Kenya has fallen out of the top 10 richest African countries in the 2026 HelloSafe Prosperity Index, highlighting a gap between economic growth and citizens’ welfare.

The ranking assessed 186 countries using indicators such as GDP per capita, Gross National Income, Human Development Index, income distribution, and poverty levels, rather than relying solely on overall GDP.

Despite projections showing Kenya’s economy could grow from 4.7% in 2024 to 5.3% in 2026, concerns remain about how evenly this growth benefits the population.

The International Monetary Fund also lowered Kenya’s 2026 growth forecast to 4.5%, citing inflation and global economic uncertainties.

Island nations Seychelles and Mauritius topped the rankings, reflecting strong income levels and high human development.

Seychelles scored 98.09, while Mauritius followed with 77.09, both classified as having “very high” human development. Other countries in the top 10 include Algeria, Gabon, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Botswana, Morocco, and South Africa.
