A family in Kisumu is still searching for justice following the death of a university student whose body was recovered days after he went missing under unclear circumstances.
Edward Ofuong’o said he last saw his son, Fidel Dennis, on an evening when the young man had delayed his return to school.
Fidel, a final-year aerospace engineering student at Kenyatta University, left home with friends after saying he would be back shortly.
When he failed to return, his father became worried and later sent him Sh25,000 through M-Pesa to support his travel plans and reassure him that he was free to proceed.
Fidel did not return that night.
The following day, concern grew after repeated calls went unanswered.
His laptop and travel bag were still in his room, suggesting he had not left for university.
Efforts to trace his movements showed that he had spent the night with a group of acquaintances at entertainment spots in Kisumu.
Accounts from those present indicated that he was separated from one friend after a phone call changed their plans.
He was then taken to different clubs before he disappeared.
A missing person report was filed at Kombewa Police Station.
Soon after, some individuals who had been with Fidel returned his phone and wristwatch to the family, claiming he had given them the items earlier.
The family questioned this explanation and asked that the items be handed to police.
Police later informed the family that a body had been recovered from River Nyamasaria.
Identification documents found on the body confirmed it was Fidel.
The remains were moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.
Investigators treated the case as murder and reviewed available evidence, including CCTV footage from one of the clubs.
The footage reportedly showed Fidel in a distressed condition and involved in a confrontation before being forced to leave alone.
A post mortem conducted by independent pathologists found that he died due to lack of oxygen and had multiple injuries. Experts noted there was no sign of drowning despite where the body was found.
The family continues to seek answers, raising concerns about missing evidence and the pace of investigations.
