A former Catholic nun has sparked widespread debate after speaking out about the circumstances that led to her removal from a religious congregation, raising fresh concerns about accountability within church institutions.

Sr Kinse Shako Annastasia, who previously served in a Nigerian congregation, shared her experience on social media, where she alleged that her dismissal followed her refusal to accept inappropriate advances during her time in religious life. 

She maintained that her decision to uphold her values came at a personal cost, ultimately leading to her expulsion.

Annastasia first drew public attention when she said that some clergy members had approached her in ways that conflicted with her vows.

After making the allegations public, she was later dismissed from the congregation. Documents she shared indicated that she received a small financial settlement of about KSh 8,600 upon her exit.

She has since insisted that her removal was influenced by individuals who opposed her stance.

Following her departure, Annastasia has openly documented the challenges she has faced while adjusting to life outside the convent.

In recent updates, she revealed that she ventured into small-scale business but suffered a setback after losing about KSh 6,700 in a failed charcoal deal.

Determined to rebuild, she turned to selling kunu, a traditional Nigerian drink made from fermented grains such as millet, sorghum, or maize.

The beverage is widely consumed for its nutritional value and is considered a healthier alternative to sugary drinks.

However, she admitted that the business did not generate enough income, forcing her to explore other options.In a video shared online, Annastasia was seen collecting used plastic bottles for resale, a move she described as necessary for survival.

She reflected on the emotional impact of her situation, noting that the transition from teaching to scavenging was difficult but also revealing.

Despite the hardships, she emphasised her commitment to honesty and resilience, encouraging others facing difficulties not to lose hope.

She said that while life can strip away status and comfort, it cannot take away one’s integrity.

Her story has drawn mixed reactions online, with many expressing support for her determination to start over and remain steadfast in her principles.
