Residents of Makueni County were recently gripped by fear and confusion after a disturbing discovery near Wote. Locals stumbled upon a small baby casket dumped by the roadside, an incident that quickly sparked speculation and alarm within the community.
Inside the casket was a blood-soaked note listing the names of nine leaders from the Ukambani region. Each name had been written in red ink, with a cross mark placed beside it.
The discovery, made on Wednesday, February 11, occurred only a few kilometres from Wote town and close to the residence of a senior official in the county.
One of the individuals whose name appeared on the note, local youth leader Meshack Kyenze, said the discovery shocked many residents and raised serious questions about its motive.
According to him, the list included both current leaders and individuals believed to have political ambitions in the county.
Kyenze explained that the incident has sparked widespread fear among locals, particularly because superstition and traditional beliefs remain common in some rural areas.
While some residents suspect the act could be linked to witchcraft or ritual practices, others believe it may have been intended as a political scare tactic aimed at intimidating leaders.
Soon after the discovery, religious leaders in the area were called to the scene. They later burned the casket and its contents in what they described as a spiritual cleansing ritual meant to calm the community.
However, the move may have complicated police investigations, as authorities lost potential evidence that could have helped identify those responsible.
Preliminary observations suggested the blood used in the casket may have come from an animal, though police have not yet released an official report on the matter.
Despite the chilling discovery, Kyenze said he would not be intimidated from continuing his leadership ambitions. Meanwhile, security agencies have launched investigations as residents wait for answers about who was behind the bizarre act and what message they intended to send.
