New details have emerged about the final moments of 44-year-old Mercy Wamaitha, a woman from Murang'a County whose body was discovered inside a small village room under shocking circumstances.
Her body was found on March 8, 2026, in Kiamakumi village in Maragua constituency.
Investigators said the scene inside the mud-walled room left many residents in shock after a bucket filled with blood was discovered near the body.
According to police, the mother of six had been married to Mr Macharia wa Njeri for many years, but their relationship had faced serious problems during the past three years.
Reports show that Wamaitha often left the matrimonial home and had started working as a house help in different towns.
Speaking after learning about her death, her husband said he had tried several times to bring her back home.
He explained that over the past three years he had gone to pick her up about three times from the house where she was later found dead.
He added that three days before her death she had left their home, saying she was going to visit her secret lover, and he had been planning to go and bring her back.
He said he was deeply saddened by the incident and still loved her.
Investigators believe the woman had been visiting the house where her body was found from time to time.
The house belongs to a man identified as Justus Kamau, who is now the main suspect in the case.
Police reports indicate that on the night before her death, the two reportedly ate ugali and beans at the suspect's grandmother's house before returning to the room.
Hours later, neighbours were woken by noise in the compound and found Wamaitha lying lifeless inside the house.
A post-mortem conducted on March 12 showed she had five stab wounds, four on the thigh and one on the palm.
Doctors said the injuries cut a major artery, which caused severe bleeding that led to her death.
Police have arrested the suspect and are continuing investigations as they try to establish who inflicted the fatal wounds.
