Heavy rainfall has once again caused serious flooding in parts of Nairobi after the Nairobi River burst its banks, leaving several roads in the city under water and disrupting movement for motorists and pedestrians.
The rains, which started late in the evening, quickly overwhelmed drainage systems in many areas of the capital.
Several commuters were stranded as water levels rose on major roads and within residential estates.
According to a statement from the Kenya Red Cross, among the hardest hit locations from the rains on Saturday evening were Parklands, the Central Business District and Ngong Road near the Ngando area.
Incidentally, locations like Lower Kabete, Kibera, Kilimani, South B, Kawangware, Langata and Lavington were also flooded.
In Eastleigh, several roads were rendered impassable after drainage systems failed to handle the large amount of water flowing through the estates.
Other affected roads include the Nairobi Expressway at the Museum Hill exit, Limuru Road, Bunyala Road and Lusaka Road, as well as several streets within the Central Business District.
In many sections of the city, vehicles were partially submerged while pedestrians struggled to move through knee deep water as drainage systems struggled to cope with the heavy downpour.
Red Cross officials said the situation worsened after both the Nairobi River and Ngong River overflowed, causing flooding even in areas that rarely experience such incidents.
Emergency teams were deployed to assist affected residents. Aqua rescue teams from the Red Cross carried out several rescue missions during the night.
In one incident, rescue teams rescued 11 people who were trapped inside a matatu that was surrounded by rising flood waters along Bunyala Road.
In another operation in Kilimani, two children were evacuated from a house that had been flooded.
While no deaths were reported from the latest floods, police records show that at least 62 people have died since the flooding season began.
