"Oburu os Smarter Than Them" Robert Alai Alleges Why Orengo, Sifuna & Others Running Away From ODM

Controversial political commentator Robert Alai has claimed that the ongoing exodus of senior leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement stems from their inability to manipulate Dr Oburu Odinga the way they allegedly did his late brother Raila Odinga.

In a recent social media post, Alai stated that the real problem in the party lies with Oburu, describing him as smarter and more astute than the current crop of leaders.

He argued that Oburu will not fall for the same tricks used to deceive Raila in the past. Alai added that many party members love Oburu exactly as he is and will not accept any attempts to undermine his leadership.

The remarks came shortly after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna publicly declared that he could never serve as ODM Secretary General under Oburu Odinga, claiming the current leadership does not deserve him.

Sifuna has been locked in a bitter dispute with the party after the National Executive Committee moved to remove him from the influential post earlier this year.

Alai suggested that figures such as Siaya Governor James Orengo and others aligning with Sifuna are distancing themselves because they cannot control or outmaneuver Oburu. The Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly has been vocal in defending Oburu amid deepening internal divisions in ODM.

The party has been grappling with parallel factions, with Oburu leading one side while Sifuna and his allies hold separate meetings under the banner of protecting ordinary members.

Analysts say the public spats reflect a power struggle as ODM tries to reorganize following the death of Raila Odinga and ahead of the 2027 general election.

Alai’s intervention has intensified debate online, with supporters of Oburu praising the defense while critics accuse him of fanning divisions. The developments highlight the fragile unity within what was once Kenya’s largest opposition party.
