A video circulating online has sparked mixed reactions after a group of Safari Rally fans in Naivasha were captured shouting the word “Wantam” as the presidential motorcade passed near a crowd of spectators during the event.
In the short clip, a convoy believed to be carrying the president is seen driving past a section of rally fans gathered along the roadside.
As the vehicles pass, several people in the crowd are heard shouting “Wantam” repeatedly while waving and recording the moment on their phones.
The video has drawn different reactions from Kenyans. The term “Wantam” is a popular political slang in Kenya derived from the English phrase “one term.”
It is often used by critics of a political leader to suggest that the leader should only serve a single term in office and not be re-elected.
The slogan has gained popularity as 2027 elections approach. The incident happened during the recently concluded 2026 Safari Rally, one of Kenya’s biggest sporting events that attracts both local and international fans.
The rally, which is part of the World Rally Championship calendar, was held between March 12 and March 15, with several stages taking place around Naivasha in Nakuru County.
Thousands of fans traveled to Naivasha to watch the competition, with many gathering at popular stages such as Hell’s Gate National Park. The large turnout led to heavy traffic along major routes leading to the rally venues as spectators streamed into the area.
Authorities had earlier warned motorists to expect congestion during the rally weekend due to the large number of fans expected to attend the global motorsport event.
Despite the traffic challenges and the viral video circulating online, the Safari Rally continued to attract thousands of spectators who turned up to witness the high-speed competition and support their favourite drivers.
