Busia County has been identified as the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) largest political stronghold, according to party Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.
Speaking at a Linda Mwananchi rally in the county on Sunday, February 8, 2026, Sifuna emphasized that the party’s influence is no longer confined to Nyanza.
He highlighted that Busia surpasses traditional ODM regions such as Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori in terms of registered party members.
This, he said, informed the party’s decision to launch its grassroots campaign in the county.
Sifuna also used the rally to address critics who have accused him of defying party directives amid ongoing discussions about a possible ODM–UDA pre-election arrangement.
He insisted that his current political stance reflects the wishes of party supporters and that he will continue on this path unless instructed otherwise.
The Nairobi senator framed his approach as a continuation of the party’s founding values.
He stressed that ODM has always prioritized speaking the truth and defending citizens’ interests, even when it challenges powerful forces.
In addition to political positioning, Sifuna addressed governance issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
He criticized the Kenya Kwanza government for policy confusion and the rising cost of living.
He pointed to the ongoing Grade 10 school uniform crisis, arguing that parents are struggling to meet the high costs while government guidance remains inconsistent.
“The situation with school uniforms shows a lack of clear planning. Parents are being told to pay high amounts, yet the government does not ensure affordability. Children are being sent to school without proper uniforms,” Sifuna remarked.
