Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) veteran James Orengo has called on the party to ensure it fields a presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, stressing that participating in the race is critical for Kenya’s democratic landscape.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Orengo emphasized that ODM cannot afford to sit out the elections, warning that failure to present a candidate would weaken the opposition and limit voters’ choices. “Azimio without ODM is like a tree without roots.
Our party must have a presidential flagbearer; this is not just about politics—it’s about protecting democracy and offering Kenyans a real alternative,” Orengo said.
Orengo’s remarks come amid ongoing debates within opposition ranks about candidate selection and coalition strategies ahead of next year’s polls.
While ODM remains part of the Azimio la Umoja coalition, some factions have suggested the party might support a consensus candidate rather than field its own.
Orengo dismissed such ideas, arguing that ODM’s historical role and national support base demand an independent presidential bid.
Political analysts say Orengo’s statement is a strategic reminder of ODM’s weight in Kenyan politics.
Dr. Joseph Mumo, a political commentator, noted, “ODM is not just a party; it’s a key player with a nationwide footprint. Skipping the race would be a huge gamble and could leave the opposition fragmented.”
The push for a clear candidate also follows a wave of internal discussions about party renewal and youth inclusion, with leaders hinting at the possibility of embracing younger aspirants to appeal to Kenya’s growing electorate.
As ODM convenes its leadership meetings this month, the party’s choice of a presidential candidate will likely set the tone for the opposition’s roadmap to 2027, making Orengo’s call a timely intervention in the national political discourse.
