"Bring Them Back With Immediate Effect" Pressure Mounts on Ruto Government Over Kenyans Reportedly Pushed to Ukraine Frontlines

Kenya’s opposition leaders have intensified pressure on President William Ruto’s administration, demanding immediate action over what they describe as a “betrayal of Kenyan youth” following disturbing reports of citizens allegedly trafficked into the Russia-Ukraine war.

In recent days, accounts have emerged of young Kenyans being lured abroad with promises of lucrative jobs, only to reportedly find themselves recruited into military service on the frontlines of the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.

Opposition figures now want the government to explain how the situation was allowed to unfold and what steps are being taken to protect vulnerable job seekers.

Several opposition politicians have called for a comprehensive investigation into recruitment agencies and brokers suspected of facilitating the travel of unsuspecting youths.

They argue that the government failed to regulate overseas employment opportunities effectively, exposing desperate job seekers to exploitation.

“The state has a duty to protect its citizens, especially young people seeking opportunities abroad,” one opposition leader said during a press briefing in Nairobi.

“We demand full disclosure and swift intervention to bring back affected Kenyans safely.”

Reports indicate that some of the affected individuals travelled to countries in Eastern Europe and Russia after being promised security or construction jobs.

However, upon arrival, they allegedly faced pressure to sign military contracts or were misled about the nature of their work.

Families back home have expressed distress, saying communication with their loved ones has been limited or inconsistent.

The government has acknowledged awareness of the reports and said it is working through diplomatic channels to verify the claims and assist any Kenyan nationals in distress.

Officials have urged citizens to be cautious when seeking employment abroad and to use only licensed recruitment agencies.

Labour and foreign affairs authorities are expected to issue further guidance as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, human rights groups and youth organisations are urging the state to strengthen oversight of foreign job recruitment and provide support for families affected by the unfolding situation.
