Gachagua Fires Back at Ruto Over “Hawana Akili” Jab at Opposition Leaders: “We Have Brains Unlike You”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at President William Ruto over his'hawana akili' remarks in which the head of state has constantly described opposition leaders as lacking brains to lead the country.

Speaking during a church service in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, on Sunday, February 8, Gachagua accused President Ruto of calling opposition leaders foolish and claiming they do not have brains.

Gachagua, however, stated that, to some extent, he understood why the President was making such remarks.

He recalled events from the 2022 General Election campaign, when Ruto, then a presidential candidate, used the United Democratic Alliance symbol of a wheelbarrow to sell his bottom-up message to Kenyans.

Gachagua said Kenyans were told that the wheelbarrow agenda would take the country to where they wanted to go.

The former deputy president noted that the President has since shifted his message, now saying he wants to transform Kenya into a country like Singapore.

According to Gachagua, continuing to believe such promises without question is why the President refers to the opposition as lacking brains.

He insisted that opposition leaders and their supporters are not foolish and do have the capacity to think and make decisions.

Gachagua said the opposition and their supporters would demonstrate their intelligence through the ballot next year.

He pointed to August 10 next year as the day votes would be cast and counted, stating that the election results would show whether the opposition truly lack brains or not.

His remarks were made in direct response to President Ruto’s repeated statements accusing the opposition of lacking brains and an agenda for Kenya.
