Sonko Blames Conjestina’s Family for Relapse After Distressing Video Sparks National Concern

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has broken his silence following a distressing video of former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng that has left Kenyans deeply worried.

The clip, which has been widely shared on social media, shows Conjestina in a troubling condition while in Yala.

In the footage, she is seen asking for money from members of the public, a situation that immediately triggered concern from Kenyans who remember her glory days as one of Kenya’s most celebrated athletes.

The video also appeared to capture Conjestina alleging that Sonko had abandoned her after she left rehabilitation, a claim that quickly fuelled online debate and emotional reactions across the country.

However, Sonko has strongly dismissed the allegations, insisting that he has not neglected the former boxer at any point in her recovery journey. According to him, Conjestina’s situation is being misunderstood and wrongly attributed to neglect on his part.

Sonko explained that during the time Conjestina was under structured care and rehabilitation, she showed clear signs of improvement and stability. He noted that she responded well to treatment and was making visible progress in her recovery journey.

However, he claimed that challenges began when her family allegedly took her away from the rehabilitation environment before she had fully recovered.

He argued that this disruption played a major role in her relapse, stating that consistency in care is crucial for long term recovery.

He further revealed that the last time he had direct involvement with Conjestina was when she was still under structured support, and since then, her progress has been affected by changes in her living and care arrangements.

Sonko maintained that he had previously supported her both financially and socially, including facilitating her stay in rehabilitation facilities where she received professional help.

He insisted that the narrative suggesting abandonment is unfair and does not reflect the full situation.

The former governor also expressed frustration over what he described as repeated interruptions in Conjestina’s recovery process, stressing that rehabilitation requires long term commitment and supervision.

Conjestina Achieng, once a national boxing hero known for her dominance in the ring, has in recent years struggled with mental health and addiction challenges that have seen her life take a difficult turn.

Her situation has continued to attract public attention, with many Kenyans expressing sadness over her current state and calling for coordinated intervention to ensure she receives sustained care and support.

Following the viral video, social media has been flooded with reactions, with some urging her family, government agencies, and well wishers to step in and provide long term solutions rather than short term interventions.

As the debate continues, Sonko’s remarks have added another layer to the discussion, shifting focus to the importance of consistent rehabilitation and shared responsibility in supporting individuals facing mental health and addiction challenges.

Many Kenyans now hope that a lasting solution will be found to help Conjestina regain stability and dignity in her life.
