Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has surprised many by changing his stance on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Earlier, Kahiga had expressed anger when Gachagua was removed from office and warned the Kenya Kwanza government against sidelining him.
However, recent statements from Kahiga show a shift in his political position. In a video seen by STESHA NEWS, he appeared to drop the “one-term narrative” associated with Gachagua and openly supported President William Ruto.
Kahiga urged the president to listen to the youth and address their concerns directly instead of using threats. He also said that including opposition leaders in government as a strategy is outdated and no longer effective.
Kahiga’s change of heart comes amid growing political realignments within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. Analysts believe that his support for Ruto could strengthen the president’s position in central Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor emphasized that leadership should focus on solving real problems faced by citizens rather than dwelling on political rivalries. He said that the youth are key in shaping Kenya’s future, and their voices must be respected in governance.
Political watchers note that Kahiga’s shift may also influence other leaders who were previously aligned with Gachagua.
By openly backing Ruto, Kahiga sends a clear signal that the 2027 elections will see more unity within the ruling coalition, at least in Nyeri County.
This development marks a significant turn in local politics, especially given Kahiga’s earlier criticism of Gachagua’s exit. As the political scene heats up, many Kenyans are keenly watching how these alignments will affect upcoming campaigns and voter sentiment in central Kenya.
