Tension gripped Tongaren in Bungoma County in the early hours of Good Friday after a dramatic turn of events involving Eliud Wekesa popularly known as “Yesu wa Tongaren.”
The self-proclaimed messiah was reportedly rushed to hospital after collapsing at his home following a night of intense pressure from a large group of devoted followers.
According to eyewitness accounts hundreds of believers gathered outside Wekesa’s residence as early as 4:00 a.m., insisting that he fulfill what they described as a divine expectation reenacting the biblical crucifixion.
The group allegedly demanded that he carry a wooden cross through the village ahead of a planned crucifixion on Monday in what they believed would mirror the suffering of Jesus Christ.
The unexpected gathering quickly escalated into a tense standoff.
Neighbors described scenes of confusion and fear as chants and prayers filled the air with followers urging Wekesa to step out and begin the procession.
However sources close to the situation say the pressure and commotion may have overwhelmed him leading to his sudden collapse.
Emergency responders were called to the scene and Wekesa was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
His condition has not yet been publicly disclosed though reports indicate he is receiving care and remains under observation.
Local authorities have since intervened to disperse the crowd and restore calm in the area.
Officials have also raised concerns about the potential risks posed by such gatherings particularly when fueled by religious fervor and heightened expectations.
This incident has reignited debate around religious extremism and the influence of charismatic figures in rural communities.
As investigations continue leaders are urging residents to exercise caution and avoid actions that could endanger lives under the guise of spiritual devotion.
