Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has strongly criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for his recent advice to the Mt Kenya region. She called his remarks hypocritical and self-serving.
Uhuru had urged voters in the region to stay united and avoid supporting politicians who promise much but deliver little. He also warned them not to repeat the “mistake” of backing President William Ruto in 2027.
Wanga reminded the public about Uhuru’s political pact with Raila Odinga during the Building Bridges Initiative and 2022 handshake era.
She said Uhuru had promised Raila the presidency in exchange for support. Many in Raila’s camp waited for that promise to be fulfilled.
According to Wanga, Uhuru later abandoned Raila, leaving his allies and supporters disappointed.
“Uhuru promised Raila the presidency, but he later abandoned him,” Wanga said. She argued that it is unfair for Uhuru to lecture Mt Kenya while ignoring his own broken promises.
She accused him of conveniently forgetting past betrayals and shifting alliances that have shaped Kenya’s politics in recent years.
Uhuru gave his warning during a public event in Mt Kenya around early April 2026. He told residents to beware of “smooth talkers” and listen to what is happening on the ground. Many interpreted his remarks as cautioning against re-electing President Ruto.
Uhuru said voters should avoid being misled by charming politicians and warned clergy and leaders against influencing voters unfairly.
Wanga did not hold back in her response. She said Uhuru’s comments were interference and an attempt to rewrite history.
She highlighted unfulfilled promises to Raila to show that Uhuru lacks the moral authority to advise Mt Kenya on avoiding mistakes. Wanga also accused external forces linked to Uhuru of trying to destabilize ODM.
Political analysts view Wanga’s remarks as part of growing competition for regional support ahead of the 2027 elections. Mt Kenya remains a key voting area. Uhuru still has influence, but Wanga’s attack aims to weaken it by reminding voters of past betrayals.
The exchange underscores tensions from the 2022 elections and the collapse of the Uhuru-Raila pact. While Uhuru positions himself as experienced and wise, Wanga frames him as part of the problem. She said Kenyans deserve honesty from leaders rather than lectures.
The war of words between the Homa Bay governor and the former president adds heat to the pre-election period. With 2027 approaching, leaders are working hard to influence voters and secure their regional strongholds.
