In a strongly worded response, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has condemned remarks made by Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi, who recently stated that political rallies would not be allowed to take place in Kisumu.
Odinga expressed her disappointment, emphasizing that such statements were uncalled for and went against the principles of democracy and freedom of expression.
Atandi's comments came in the wake of plans by a political group, led by Senator James Orengo and other leaders aligned with the "Linda Mwananchi" movement, to hold rallies in Kisumu.
Atandi, a fellow member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), cautioned the group, warning that their activities could destabilize the region's political climate.
However, Odinga, who is also a member of the ODM party, took to social media to express her disapproval of Atandi's remarks.
In her statement, she noted, "It’s deeply regrettable that an elected MP would publicly declare that a political rally won’t be allowed to happen in Kisumu."
The Woman Representative emphasized that Kisumu, like any other county, should embrace political diversity, where individuals are free to express their views peacefully.
Odinga further pointed out that the people of Kisumu had a long-standing history of political activism and should be allowed to engage in any political activity without fear of restriction.
She urged fellow leaders, including Atandi, to uphold democratic values and respect the rights of citizens to organize peaceful rallies.
Her message resonated with many Kisumu residents, who expressed their support for her stance on social media platforms. The controversy highlights the tensions within the ODM party, as leaders debate how to balance internal party dynamics with the broader political landscape.
