Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has criticised efforts to remove Edwin Sifuna from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), warning that such a move would undermine the legacy of the late Raila Odinga.
Speaking during an interview on Herman Manyora’s podcast, Kalonzo described Sifuna as a key figure who embodied Raila’s political ideals. He argued that removing him from the party would signal a departure from the principles that shaped ODM over the past two decades.
Kalonzo further stated that ODM risks losing its identity if leaders allied to Sifuna, including Babu Owino and Godfrey Osotsi, are sidelined.
According to him, such changes would create a “different ODM,” one disconnected from its founding vision and values.
In a sharp critique, Kalonzo suggested that the party could evolve into what he termed a “Ruto-aligned ODM,” referencing President William Ruto. He warned that this would strip the party of its ideological foundation and reduce it to a shell of its former self.
The Wiper leader also praised Sifuna’s courage and patriotism, likening his bold stance to the spirit displayed by Gen Z protesters. He affirmed that the United Opposition would be open to working with Sifuna if he is pushed out of ODM, adding that he sees him as a future leader.
The remarks come amid ongoing internal disputes within ODM, including a recent tribunal ruling that redirected attempts to remove Sifuna as Secretary-General to the party’s internal mechanisms. The situation highlights growing tensions and possible realignments within Kenya’s opposition politics.
