A fresh revelation by Moses Kuria has reignited debate over how William Ruto settled on his running mate ahead of the hotly contested 2022 Kenyan General Election.
Speaking during an interview with Jesse Rogers on KTN News, Kuria disclosed that Rigathi Gachagua secured only five votes from a select group of lawmakers during internal consultations within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
According to Kuria, those who backed Gachagua included Kimani Ngunjiri, Ndindi Nyoro, Jane Kihara, James Gakuya, and Charles Kanyi.
He dismissed claims by others who have previously suggested they supported Gachagua, bluntly stating that “anybody else who tells you they voted for Gachagua is a liar.”
Kuria further revealed that the majority of MPs favored Kithure Kindiki for the deputy president slot, making him the most popular choice among legislators at the time.
Despite this apparent consensus, the final decision rested with Ruto, who ultimately picked Gachagua as his running mate, a move that has since been widely analyzed in political circles.
In a surprising twist, Kuria also disclosed that Justin Muturi, who had also expressed interest in the position, received just one vote, his own.
The remarks have sparked renewed public discussion about the internal dynamics that shaped Kenya Kwanza’s leadership lineup, especially given the political developments that have unfolded since the election.
Analysts now say Kuria’s comments could fuel further scrutiny of decision-making within the ruling coalition, as well as revive questions about whether political loyalty or strategic calculations ultimately influenced Ruto’s choice.
As the country gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 elections, such revelations are likely to intensify political realignments and debates within key power blocs.
