Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has addressed growing calls from his allies and supporters urging him to contest for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with the BBC, Sifuna was asked whether he intends to vie for the country’s top seat in the upcoming polls.
In response, the senator said he is not yet fully convinced that the support being shown to him is sufficient to warrant a presidential bid.
Sifuna revealed that before making any move for the top seat, he wants clear data to confirm the level of backing he enjoys across the country.
He noted that social media excitement can sometimes be misleading and may not necessarily translate into actual votes.
He however noted that he is ready to go for any position should Kenyans decide to back him.
“Kabla munidanganye, tunataka kuona takwimu. Tunataka kufanya sensa ya watu wanajiita Sifuna tujuwe tuko wangapi.
Kwa sababu tumekuwa na mihemko ya mitandao ya kijamii hapo nyuma ambayo haikuonekana kama ni support ya kisiasa. Mimi niko tayari kufanya kazi yoyote hata ikiwa ni kufagia State House.”
This loosely translates to, “Before you mislead me, we want to see the numbers. We want to conduct a census of those who call themselves Sifuna supporters so we can know how many we really are.
We have previously experienced social media hype that did not reflect real political support. I am ready to serve in any capacity, even if it means sweeping at State House.”
During the interview, Sifuna also criticized President William Ruto’s administration over rising unemployment and its response to critics, arguing that more needs to be done to address the concerns of Kenyans.
