Armed assailants launched a daring night attack on Musanda Police Station in Mumias West Constituency, Kakamega County, leaving three police officers and a civilian injured before fleeing with two G3 rifles loaded with ammunition.
The Friday night raid has sent shockwaves across the region, raising fresh concerns over the security of police installations and the safety of officers deployed in remote stations.
According to preliminary reports, the attackers—believed to be armed and operating in a coordinated group—stormed the station under the cover of darkness.
The assailants reportedly overpowered officers on duty, injuring three in the process. A civilian who was within the station’s vicinity at the time of the attack was also caught in the chaos and sustained injuries.
In the melee, the attackers made away with two G3 rifles loaded with ammunition, a development that security experts warn could pose a significant threat if the weapons fall into the wrong hands.
The injured officers and the civilian were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Authorities have not yet disclosed the severity of their injuries but confirmed that all are receiving medical attention.
Senior security officials have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, with reinforcements deployed across Mumias West and surrounding areas.
Roadblocks were mounted overnight as police intensified patrols in an effort to track down the attackers and recover the stolen firearms.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though investigators are exploring several angles, including the possibility of a targeted raid aimed at acquiring weapons.
The incident has sparked anxiety among residents of Mumias West, who are now calling for heightened security measures and increased police presence to prevent further attacks.
Police headquarters is expected to issue a comprehensive statement as investigations continue.
