France has sent 800 soldiers to Kenya. These soldiers are from the French Army. They came to Kenya using three big warships.
The ships arrived at the Port of Mombasa. This is a very big move. It shows that France and Kenya are becoming friends and want to work together.
French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, said the soldiers are here to help and train the Kenya Defence Forces, also called KDF. The goal is to make Kenya stronger in security and to make the Navy better. The training will help young Kenyan officers learn new skills.
The French Embassy in Nairobi spokesperson, Romain Boyer, said the soldiers will train Navy cadets. He said some young officers will finish their training at sea. After training, they will join the first unit of the Navy.
Boyer also said that this is not only training. It is also an operational mission. He said, “We are training and at the same time providing security at sea. This is very important because there are more security problems in the Indian Ocean.”
The timing of this mission is also very important. Kenya will host the Africa-France Summit in May 2026. This is the first time that a non-French-speaking African country will host this summit. Normally, the summit is in France or in a country in Africa that speaks French.
President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron announced in September 2024 that Nairobi will host the summit.
They made this announcement during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. The summit will talk about big issues like climate change, protecting the environment, and making better financial systems in Africa.
The French soldiers will not only train the Navy, but they will also help Kenya be ready for any danger at sea. This partnership between France and Kenya is very important. It shows that the two countries can work together. They want to keep the seas safe and make their friendship stronger.
The arrival of these 800 French soldiers is a big and historic moment. It will help Kenya in training, in security, and in building stronger ties with France. Both countries are sending a message that they care about safety, peace, and good partnership.
