Tension was reported in Evurore Ward on Wednesday, 26 February, as violence broke out during the ongoing by-elections, raising fresh concerns over voter safety and the credibility of the exercise.
The incident happened at Njarage Primary School polling station, where Kelvin Mwenda, the chief agent for DP candidate Albert Kigoro, said he was attacked while performing his duties.
Mwenda stated that he was monitoring the voting process when a group of suspected goons confronted him and turned violent. Mwenda said he was carrying out his role as the chief agent for DP candidate Albert Kigoro when a group of goons confronted and assaulted him at the polling station.
He added that during the chaos, a vehicle belonging to Albert Kigoro, which he was using, was vandalised.
Mwenda later reported the matter at Ishiara Police Station, saying the attack was meant to intimidate him and scare voters from taking part in the process.
Source: People DailyMwenda said he had reported the incident at Ishiara Police Station under OB number 11 recorded on 26 2 2026 and expressed hope that police would investigate the matter and arrest those who injured him.
The violence came as voters continued to trickle into polling stations across the ward, with officials confirming low turnout in several centres.
At Kanyuambora Primary School, the largest polling station in the area, only a small number of voters were seen casting their ballots.
Returning Officer James Mwangi said the exercise was moving on smoothly despite the incident.
He confirmed that all materials were delivered on time and security officers deployed, adding that stations which opened late would be allowed extra time before closing at 5pm.
Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi, who voted at Kanyuambora Primary School, linked the low turnout to claims of voter bribery and called for calm as counting awaits later in the day.
