Chaos erupted on Saturday, March 14, in Bungoma County after suspected goons attacked a campaign command centre linked to politician Tim Wanyonyi, raising fresh concerns over rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 general election.
The incident occurred at the Eninga Command Centre located in Makutano, Kanduyi Constituency. According to eyewitnesses, a group of unidentified attackers stormed the premises in the afternoon, causing widespread damage and injuring some of the security personnel stationed at the facility.
Witnesses said the assailants arrived suddenly and began pelting stones at the building, shattering windows and damaging property inside the command centre.
The attackers reportedly forced their way into parts of the compound, vandalising equipment and office items before fleeing the scene.
Security guards attempted to contain the situation but were overwhelmed by the number of individuals involved in the attack. Several guards sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.
Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported and worked to restore order while securing the area. Authorities confirmed that investigations have been launched to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.
Security agencies stated that efforts are ongoing to track down the suspects and ensure they face legal action.
The command centre is associated with Wanyonyi, who has recently intensified political engagements as he positions himself for future leadership roles ahead of the 2027 polls.
The incident has triggered concern among residents and political observers, who fear that such acts could signal escalating political rivalry in the region.
Local leaders strongly condemned the violence and called for calm among supporters and political actors. They urged all parties to promote peaceful political competition and resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than confrontation or destruction of property.
No arrests had been announced by the time of reporting, and police say investigations remain ongoing as security agencies continue gathering evidence and reviewing witness accounts related to the attack.
Authorities have also assured residents that additional security measures are being put in place to prevent further incidents and protect political offices, businesses, and members of the public in the area.
