A section of aspirants within the Jubilee Party has raised concern over the manner in which former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i emerged as the party’s 2027 presidential flagbearer.
The group, which is linked to former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, is now demanding clarity from party leader Uhuru Kenyatta.
They say the process that led to Matiang’i’s endorsement was not open and did not involve wider consultations within party structures.
The aspirants argue that many leaders who had shown interest in various positions ahead of the 2027 General Election were not informed of any formal meeting to settle on a presidential candidate.
They claim that the announcement caught grassroots officials by surprise and has created confusion at the county level.
According to the group, Jubilee needs to explain whether it has entered into pre-election coalitions with other political parties.
They also want to know if there are zoning arrangements that could lock out some aspirants from contesting in certain regions.
The leaders insist that party democracy must be respected if Jubilee hopes to rebuild its support base.
They say members at the grassroots are seeking direction on the party’s strategy, especially in Mt Kenya and other regions where Jubilee once enjoyed strong backing.
