A new opinion poll released in March 2026 has placed James Kamau Murango in a commanding position in the race for the Kirinyaga governor seat, giving him a clear advantage over his rivals.
The survey, conducted by Politrack Africa, shows Murango receiving 49.4 percent support from voters in Kirinyaga County. The poll sampled 4,096 respondents, placing Murango just below the 50 percent mark that would signal outright dominance in the contest.
Murango, who is affiliated with the Democracy for Citizens Party, enjoys a lead of about 20 percentage points over his closest challenger. The gap suggests he would be the clear favorite if an election were held today.
Coming second in the poll is Purity Wangui Ngirichi of the United Democratic Alliance, who receives 29.2 percent support. Her performance places her firmly in the race but still well behind the current frontrunner.
Another UDA candidate, Joseph Gachoki Gitari, trails with 9.1 percent support. The presence of two candidates from the same party appears to divide the party’s base, which may be weakening its overall position in the contest.
Meanwhile, former Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho secures 8.1 percent support in the poll. While his numbers remain modest, his name recognition and government experience keep him visible in the race.
The poll also shows that 4.3 percent of respondents remain undecided or prefer other candidates not listed among the main contenders.
Though this group is relatively small, their choices could still influence the final outcome as the political season progresses.
Political analysts say Murango’s strong showing gives him early momentum in the race. However, Kirinyaga politics has a history of shifting alliances and unexpected turns, meaning the race could still change as campaigns intensify.
For now, the poll paints a clear picture. Murango holds a strong lead, while his competitors face the challenge of closing the gap before the political contest enters its most critical stage.
