Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a stern warning to leaders from Kitui County who are aligning themselves with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), saying the region must remain united behind its traditional political base.
Speaking on Saturday during a public address in Kitui, Kalonzo criticised a section of local politicians who have recently shown support for President William Ruto and his party.
He described the shift as a betrayal of the Ukambani region’s political direction and urged leaders to remain loyal to the opposition.
“You cannot serve two masters. You are either with us or against us,” Kalonzo told the gathering, drawing loud reactions from supporters.
His remarks come amid growing signs of political realignment in Eastern Kenya as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
In recent weeks, several Kitui-based politicians have been spotted at events associated with UDA, raising speculation about possible defections from Wiper and the Azimio coalition.
The moves have unsettled Kalonzo’s support base, which has historically been solid in the region.
Kalonzo said the opposition would not tolerate “double-dealing,” warning that leaders who continue to engage with the ruling party risk losing the backing of local voters.
He insisted that unity within Wiper and its allies is critical if the opposition hopes to mount a strong challenge in the next election.
Political analysts say Kalonzo’s tough stance reflects increasing pressure on opposition leaders to maintain influence in their strongholds as the Kenya Kwanza administration seeks to expand its reach across the country.
For residents of Kitui, the unfolding political rivalry signals an early start to the 2027 campaigns. With leaders now openly taking sides, the region is expected to become a key battleground in the coming months as parties intensify mobilisation efforts.
