Detectives in Bomet Central have arrested a 29-year-old man believed to be behind a series of mobile phone thefts that have troubled residents in parts of Bomet and Migori counties.
The suspect, identified as Jackson Mahono, was apprehended following a crucial tip-off from members of the public, highlighting the growing role of community policing in tackling crime.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers recovered multiple stolen smartphones during the operation.
Among the gadgets found in his possession were Vivo, Infinix, Samsung, Tecno and Nokia phones suspected to have been snatched from unsuspecting members of the public in Kehancha, Migori and Bomet towns.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Mahono was allegedly planning to “flash” the devices — a process meant to alter their identification details — before reselling them to unsuspecting buyers in Migori County.
Police confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court. Meanwhile, the recovered phones have been subjected to forensic analysis to help trace and return them to their rightful owners.
The DCI reiterated that through intelligence-led operations, forensic expertise and close collaboration with wananchi, it remains relentless in its crackdown on mobile phone theft and other street crimes.
