The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Oburu Odinga, has clarified the status of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna following recent disagreements within the party.
Speaking during a church service in Mombasa on Sunday, Oburu said that Sifuna was not expelled from ODM as some reports had claimed.
Instead, he explained that Sifuna was removed from his position as the party’s Secretary General due to disciplinary reasons. However, he remains a member of the party.
Oburu stressed that ODM is guided by its constitution and rules, which must be respected by all members. He said discipline is important in any political party because it helps maintain order and unity. According to him, leaders must set an example by following party decisions even when they disagree.
He confirmed that Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo is now serving as the interim Secretary General.
Oburu said the party leadership agreed on this change after a meeting of its national executive committee. He added that the decision was made in the interest of strengthening the party.
The ODM leader also made it clear that no individual is bigger than the party. He said that even he can be disciplined if he goes against party principles.
In his view, allowing members to act without consequences would weaken the party and create confusion among supporters.
The issue has, however, taken a legal turn. Sifuna moved to court to challenge his removal from office. The High Court issued temporary orders stopping the party from officially replacing him until the case is heard and determined.
This has created two sides within the party, with some leaders supporting the new changes while others back Sifuna.
Despite the ongoing dispute, Oburu insisted that ODM remains united. He urged members to remain calm and avoid actions that could harm the party’s image. He also warned against outside forces that may want to take advantage of the situation to cause divisions.
As the court prepares to hear the case, political observers are watching closely. Many believe the outcome will shape the future direction of ODM and influence its unity ahead of upcoming political activities.
