Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken a swipe at President William Ruto, warning him that the Mt Kenya region will not support him in the 2027 elections despite his efforts to woo the community with money.
Gachagua accused the President of betrayal, saying the community overwhelmingly backed him in 2022 only for him to turn against them once in office
“You say you will buy everyone with money. Let me tell you, these people will eat your money but will never vote for you,” Gachagua told the crowd, drawing cheers from his supporters.
He went on to accuse Ruto of disrespecting Mt Kenya despite having taken his oath of office with the Bible, promising to stand with the region.
“We gave you our votes, but you have now despised us. You cannot buy the soul of this community,” he said.
Gachagua, who has since announced his presidential ambitions, positioned himself as the best candidate to remove Ruto from power in 2027. He said Kenyans have weighed their options and see him as the strongest alternative.
“Wakenya wameniambia dawa ya kufukuza Kasongo ni Riggy G,” he said, asking the crowd how many would support his State House bid.
The DCP leader outlined reforms he would prioritize if elected, focusing on healthcare and education. He promised to restore free education for all, recalling the policies of former President Mwai Kibaki.
“The first thing I will do as president is fix education. Children must study for free, as Kibaki had planned,” he assured.
Gachagua also attacked leaders from Murang’a who recently visited Ruto at State House, branding them as traitors who had sold out their community. He urged voters to note those who put personal gain ahead of their people’s interests.
“Take the money and use it, but do not sell your conscience. Those who betray Mt Kenya will be punished by voters,” he added.
Gachagua to Ruto: We will eat your money but we will not vote for you
According to Gachagua, Ruto’s strategy is to divide the mountain by pitting counties against each other, a plan he said would fail.
He insisted the region will remain united and would not be swayed by handouts.
