"We Will Either Be Part Of The Government Or Form The Government," ODM Declares

Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has confirmed that the party will concentrate on participating in, or forming, the next government. He said opposition matters have been left to other political players.

Speaking on Friday, Sheriff emphasized that ODM’s strategy is clear: “We are either part of the government or forming government. The role of the opposition, we’ve left to others,” he told journalists.

The remarks signal a firm stance by the party amid increasing speculation about Kenya’s political alignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

ODM, the country’s oldest opposition party, has historically played both government and opposition roles.

Sheriff explained that the party’s position was reached after careful consultation among its leadership.

He insisted that ODM seeks a proactive role in shaping policies rather than simply reacting from opposition benches.

Political analysts say ODM’s statement narrows the space for opposition parties, especially as alliances begin to form ahead of the polls. Sheriff’s remarks are seen as a strategic message to potential partners.

“The focus is on governance. We want to influence decisions directly rather than being spectators,” Sheriff added, underscoring the party’s commitment to playing a central role in national leadership.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has also reiterated the party’s commitment to working with coalition partners to ensure a strong government formation.

He stressed that negotiations with other parties are ongoing but grounded in clear principles.

Sheriff further hinted that ODM will be selective in alliances, choosing partners who share its vision for national development, devolution, and economic growth. The party has repeatedly emphasized inclusivity and good governance.

The remarks come amid growing political realignments in Kenya, with parties positioning themselves for strategic advantage.

ODM’s focus on government participation signals a proactive approach to shaping policies and national programs.

Observers note that ODM’s statement may put pressure on smaller parties and independent politicians to clarify their positions, as the 2027 election campaign gears up.

The party seems set to define the agenda, leaving opposition roles largely symbolic.

ODM’s firm stance is expected to dominate political discourse in the coming months, with Sheriff urging members to rally behind the party’s vision for leadership, national development, and transformative governance.
