A cloud of grief has engulfed Kanyakwar area in Kisumu Central Sub-County after four young children drowned while swimming in an abandoned quarry, leaving their family and the entire community in shock and deep sorrow.
The children’s father, Mr. Felix Otieno, has painfully narrated how his normal day turned into a nightmare within hours.
Felix, who is the father of four, had earlier left home to look for casual work in the Ubungo area.
Like any other day, he hoped to earn some money to support his family, unaware that tragedy was about to strike.
According to Felix, he received a disturbing phone call just a few hours after leaving home.
The call came from his own father, who urgently asked him to return home immediately.
When Felix tried to ask what had happened, his father broke the devastating news, telling him that all his children had drowned in water.
Shocked and confused, Felix rushed back home without delay.
Upon arriving at the scene, Felix found that his brother, together with other residents, had already managed to retrieve three bodies from the abandoned quarry.
One child’s body was still missing in the deep water, as efforts to retrieve it continued.
The sight of his lifeless children left Felix and other family members overwhelmed with pain.
Felix revealed that he had earlier warned his children to stay away from the abandoned quarry, which is known to be dangerous.
He said he had specifically instructed the older children to help the younger ones with household chores such as fetching water, instead of allowing them to go near the quarry.
Sadly, what he thought was a clear warning did not prevent the tragedy.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident happened when one of the boys moved into a deeper section of the quarry while swimming.
The child reportedly struggled in the water and began to drown.
