"Karua Can't Be A Running Mate In Opposition Because She Has Nothing To Bring On Table" Analyst

Political analyst Rachael Omollo has cast doubt on the prospects of Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua emerging as a running mate under a united opposition arrangement, arguing that contemporary politics is driven by numbers and financial muscle rather than symbolism.

Speaking during a public policy discussion on opposition realignments ahead of the next General Election, Omollo said past political pairings involving Karua have failed to deliver electoral victory, a trend she believes could repeat itself if the opposition settles on her again.

“Raila Odinga and Martha Karua didn’t work, and I don’t think Martha Karua and Kalonzo will work either,” Omollo said.

“The reality of politics is: are you coming with people or money? So, what is Martha bringing to the table?”

Omollo argued that coalition politics in Kenya has evolved into a high-stakes contest where regional voting blocs, party machinery and campaign resources play a decisive role.

In her view, moral authority, integrity and reformist credentials—often associated with Karua—are no longer sufficient to secure a winning ticket.

She noted that successful running mates in recent elections have typically commanded strong grassroots support in vote-rich regions or contributed significant resources to national campaigns.

Without these assets, Omollo said, it would be difficult for Karua to justify her inclusion on a competitive opposition ticket.

The remarks come amid renewed discussions within opposition circles about forming a united front to challenge the ruling coalition.

Names such as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Cabinet Secretaries and regional political heavyweights have been floated as possible principals in the coalition.

While acknowledging Karua’s long-standing reputation as a reformist and her role in past democratic struggles, Omollo maintained that electoral politics is ultimately transactional.

“This is not about character assassination,” she said. “It is about being realistic with how elections are won in Kenya today.”

Karua has not publicly responded to the remarks, but her allies have previously defended her political value, citing her national profile and appeal to reform-minded voters.

As opposition talks continue, the debate over who brings real value to the table is expected to intensify.
