Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has addressed long-running public speculation about his political future, stating that he will not contest for the presidency in the 2031 general elections.
His remarks come after months of intense debate among Ugandans, political analysts, and commentators who have widely viewed him as a potential successor to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
For a long time, Gen Muhoozi has been seen by many as a central figure in Uganda’s future leadership, with supporters arguing that his growing influence within the military and public space signaled a gradual preparation for national leadership.
This perception was further fueled by his close association with key political and security structures in the country. As a result, expectations were high that he would make a presidential bid in 2031.
However, Gen Muhoozi dismissed these assumptions, explaining that his life and career have been firmly rooted in military service.
He said his focus remains on serving the nation through the army and continuing what he described as his commitment to “God’s Army.”
According to him, the demands of military leadership leave little room for pursuing elective political office.
In a move that surprised many observers, Gen Muhoozi instead endorsed his uncle, Salim Saleh, as the person he believes is better suited to lead the country in the future.
He described him as more experienced and capable, adding that he was content stepping aside from political ambitions.
The statement has generated mixed reactions across the country.
While some Ugandans have welcomed the clarity, others remain skeptical, questioning whether the announcement reflects a firm personal decision or a calculated political position that could change with time. Political commentators note that Ugandan politics has often seen shifts in strategy as election periods draw closer.
As things stand, there is no official indication that Gen Muhoozi plans to reconsider his position.
