“I Was Arrested by Police Officer, Taken to Male Cells and Gang Raped” Nairobi Woman Recounts Ordeal

A woman from Nairobi has come forward with disturbing allegations of sexual assault while she was in police custody, sparking outrage and renewed scrutiny of detention procedures.

Martha Ochieng says what began as an arrest over a minor traffic violation quickly turned into a traumatic experience she never imagined.

According to her account, officers at the station allegedly failed to follow standard custody regulations and placed her in a holding cell designated for male detainees.

She says she protested repeatedly, warning the officers that her safety was at risk, but claims her concerns were ignored.

Martha recounts that once inside the cell, she faced intimidation, verbal abuse, and sexual harassment from male inmates. She alleges that the situation later escalated into a prolonged sexual assault, leaving her physically hurt and emotionally devastated.

She states that she was eventually released after a friend intervened on her behalf. Following the incident, she sought medical treatment and psychological support before deciding to publicly share her story in pursuit of justice.

Martha accuses the officers involved of negligence and abuse of authority, arguing that her ordeal was preventable had proper procedures been followed.

Kenyan law and policing guidelines require strict separation of male and female detainees and obligate officers to guarantee the safety of those in custody.

Her allegations have drawn condemnation from legal professionals and human rights advocates, who describe the claims as serious violations of constitutional protections.

Activists are now urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct an independent investigation and hold any responsible officers accountable.

The case has reignited public debate about police accountability and the safety of women in detention facilities, with many calling for urgent reforms to strengthen oversight and protect detainees from abuse.
